2023 was a super busy year which meant little time for ‘not work related’ photography. Street photography is so fickle. When I did have time to get out, I was lucky if I came away with one image that I was happy with. Travelling with the family also produced a few images squeezed in between the sightseeing, coffee drinking and eating. Now I have a quiet period before it all kicks off again. So camera fingers crossed.

After a busy summer of photography, weddings and family sessions, it can be hard to get out with a camera and take photos just for fun. I think it’s mainly the thought of ‘oh no, not more editing’. Why would I do that to myself. Winter, however, is my only time to sharpen my skills, test new lens, cameras etc.

A quick little outing for the Fujifilm Xpro 3 equipped with the XF23mm F2. The first real reportage that I’ve taken this year. Felt a little odd to be out and amongst so many people. Actually quite enjoyed using the controversial flip down screen for some extra candidness. Also I feel the wine may have contributed. Looking forward to using the Xpro 3 at the weddings later this year.

Anyone with a dog will be familiar with passing the same scenery everyday. In the rain. In the sunshine. In the wind. It can all blend into one continuous dog walking memory. Some days, however, the shift in light changes your focus. The stillness encompasses you. You sink into that moment.
There is spot where we often pause to admire the view although for him (the dog) I think it’s the spot where his belly get rubbed. Ultimately, we’re both happy. We watched all the elements of the scene below fall into place. As always I’d forgotten my ‘real’ camera so the phone had to suffice.
Turns out it quite literally was the calm before the storm.

I’ve recently traded in my trusty Fujifilm Xpro 2 for its newer incarnation, the controversial hidden back screen beauty, the Xpro 3. I hadn’t had much chance to test it out over the holidays. So what do you do when the weather is brutal and it’s cold outside? You go out and you take photos like an idiot. I wanted to use only the in camera Jpeg settings. Little, if no processing in Lightroom. A tweaked Classic Negative and off I went.
Not a long walk, I’ll be honest. There is only so much wind battering, salt shredding a mild mannered photographer can take. I’m trying to be more aware of photographing with feeling. Rather than just capture the scene. The cold hint of the Classic Negative seemed to play to this quite well. Trying to hold a camera straight whilst being knocked sideways by the gales also played a part.
Right off to warm up with a wee dram.

I’ve just come back from a trip back to Wales. My first journey outside Crete in 2 years. I missed the misty grey days, the drizzle. It was refreshing to get back to it all. I wouldn’t want it all year round but I do now feel invigorated.
On another note, these are the some of the last images I took on my Fujifilm Xpro 2 before it was traded in for it’s newer model. I love this style of camera. It’s possible I may trade in my XT3 for another one. The XT3 is a workhorse, but I don’t get the same feeling shooting with it. All the images are straight from camera, Acros simulation jpegs with a few tweaks to the warmth in Lightroom. Simple, the way I like it. So enjoy the mist & mood. (click for full size images)

I could see this couple sat just off the path. I was drawn first of all to their contrasting, vibrant rain macs against the backdrop of dark green foliage. Then there was the fact that they were dozing or just blissfully enveloped in the music. A touch of romance or close company in holding hands. The carton of orange juice off to the side, much like our British picnic earlier.
It was a great image, but I hesitated at first to take it. I didn’t want to intrude on their moment. Always I feel a tinge of guilt. But then I think, they would have loved the photo. If they had opened their eyes, I would have quite happily shown it to them. A couple truly enjoying the moment.
